Locale Magazine

I interviewed fashion entrepreneur Danielle Nagel on her recent interior design projects for the Escape Section of Locale Magazine.

“The power of color is a strength that Nagel knows how to wield in fashion, art and design. Featuring bold colors in every room, the apartment is emblematic of Nagel’s identifiable signature style - fearless, feminine and uplifting.”

The story appeared online and in print.

Palm Springs Life Magazine

In advance of the announcement, I wrote a story reporting on the two potential locations of the Aluminaire House, a legendary project by architect Albert Frey. For the story, I interviewed Alan Hess, notable architect and historian, and Mark Davis, treasurer and board director of Modernism Week.

“Once the Aluminaire is reassembled at its new location, the house will be on view to the public. Davis emphasized the importance of its accessibility to local residents and visitors alike: “It will be extraordinarily meaningful for the city and for our architectural heritage tourism – for the world to be able to come see it.”

Cree House Reimagined

Palm Springs Life

In advance of Modernism Week, I wrote a story previewing The Cree House, originally designed by notable architect Albert Frey.

“Indeed, a sense of play comes to life through the Herman Miller® furnishings selected for the interiors. In white ash wood, the curvy Eames lounge chair takes residence in the living room, aside the Noguchi accent table in oak. Sandy brown rocks, visible through the home’s expansive windows, set a natural backdrop for a light, airy interior motif accented by dark walnut tones.”

Plane Truth: How to Immerse Yourself in a Culture

Lojel

I was tasked with writing on the topic of cultural immersion for Lojel, an international luggage brand. The piece appeared in Paid Leave, Issue #5, the brand’s online publication.

“I step into new experiences with an open mind, and I’ve gotten comfortable with feeling out of place. Going to a party where no one is speaking my language is more than okay: I sit as an observer, listening to the waves of French, Portuguese, Spanish, and German, all lingering in the same air. Although I may be an outsider, by remaining attentive, I fit in just as much as anyone else in the room.”

How fitness brands build stronger connections with consumers

A Little Bird is a brand activation agency based in Los Angeles and London. For the blog section of the website, I wrote a piece on how fitness brands can effectively market to audiences.

“We now know that Steve Jobs had it right when he insisted, against skepticism from pundits at the time, that Apple open brick-and-mortar stores. Retail brands that specialize in fitness wear need to ignore the calls of the “death of retail” and apply a similar philosophy.”

LOCALE Magazine

For LOCALE’s February 2019 issue, I wrote a “palate passport” to the top sushi, pizza, and Mexican restaurants in Los Angeles.

“Cannoli imagine one more slice, please. Who says NY has the only good pizza in America? Not us. Vito’s Pizza hits a high note that so many others just can’t reach. Skip the red sauce and go for The Sophia Loren with caramelized onions, goat cheese, arugula and pine nuts. Yum!”

Nicole Ari Parker: Making Her Own Empire

LOCALE Magazine

I wrote the cover story for the February 2019 issue of LOCALE Magazine on celebrity Nicole Ari Parker. The story also included a “Making the Issue” feature.

“Soon, Parker’s breakout role sparked the first flames of the fire she’s known for today. And, the heat is rising. Parker’s character, Giselle Barker, in the hit TV drama “Empire,” came on in the fourth season as Eddie Barker’s (Forest Whitaker) ex-wife. Parker said, “I got a call saying, ‘Do you want to play Forest Whitaker’s ex-wife on “Empire?”’ I said, absolutely. It was a hit show and an Oscar winner in one phone call.” Soon after, the writers decided to make Giselle a recurring character on the show for the fifth season.”

Memories in the Making

The Argonaut

Santa Monica College students and faculty offered free family portraits to survivors of the Woolsey Fire. I covered the story for The Argonaut and spoke with families affected.

“Bruce Bates said it took some time for the reality to set in that they had no place to stay, no change of clothes — not even a toothbrush. But family, friends and community members quickly rallied around them with help and support.”
