Plane Truth: How to Immerse Yourself in a Culture

July 17, 2019 Jennifer Pellerito
LOJEL-PL5-plane-truth-00.jpg

Lojel

I was tasked with writing on the topic of cultural immersion for Lojel, an international luggage brand. The piece appeared in Paid Leave, Issue #5, the brand’s online publication.

“I step into new experiences with an open mind, and I’ve gotten comfortable with feeling out of place. Going to a party where no one is speaking my language is more than okay: I sit as an observer, listening to the waves of French, Portuguese, Spanish, and German, all lingering in the same air. Although I may be an outsider, by remaining attentive, I fit in just as much as anyone else in the room.”

Locale Magazine

I wrote a roundup of boutique hotels for Locale Magazine’s Escape section.

“It might not be the 1950s anymore, but don’t let that stop you from posing poolside and pretending you’re taking a Slim Aarons photo. Bring your own Rat Pack along for the trip, or enjoy the ambiance entirely solo.”

Jen on the Run

For my travel blog, I wrote a culinary guide to traditional Oaxacan food and drink I discovered during my week-long visit.

“Beautifully decorated with whimsical and modern decor, Pitiona will surprise and delight you throughout your dining experience. You’ll feel super fancy during your four-course meal and the waiters will treat you like royalty.”

Thanksgiving Dinner at Palm Springs Restaurants

LOCALE Magazine

For LOCALE’s Greater Palm Springs edition, I wrote a listicle featuring 11 Palm Springs restaurants offering Thanksgiving dinner specials.

“The only meal prep you’ll need this Thanksgiving is making sure your stomach is empty ahead of time. With these tantalizing specialty menu offerings made exclusively for Thanksgiving Day, you won’t need a fire extinguisher at the ready in the kitchen this year. Most pilgrims would agree, avoiding a major kitchen meltdown is more than enough to be grateful for. Pass the cranberries—and the hibiscus sangria, please.”

Venice: Through the eyes of a local

Jen on the Run

For my travel blog, Jen on the Run, I wrote a creative piece on my experience getting lost in Venice, Italy.

“Like closing my eyes and spinning underwater, my sense of direction spirals away from me, gladly. There is a sense of privacy in the narrow alleyways of Venice, a hushed, peaceful intimacy that can be entirely lost in the more populated areas.

We see the people who live here and walk these streets every day pass us by, and I wonder what it would be like to have lived here for generations. How have they seen the city change, for better and for worse?”

A Case for Solitude

Lojel

I was tasked with writing about solo travel for Lojel, an international luggage brand. The piece appeared in Paid Leave, Issue #3, the brand’s online publication.

“Traveling alone has given me the freedom to pursue my own passions while also welcoming the “risk” of meeting strangers. I’ve learned, more than anything, that though we may speak a different language, we are more similar than we are different. Only when we realize this can we truly understand what it means to be alone—and fully appreciate the times when we are not.”
